Consigue 4 cartas de recomendación. Algunos sugieren 3 cartas, pero con 4 vas a tener mejores chances.

Trata que te las escriban profesores que te conocen para que resalten tus cualidades.

Cartas que se ven mejor en tu aplicación son las siguientes: 1) La carta de un profesor de una universidad de USA es consistentemente la más importante. 2) Profesores que tienen contactos en programas de residencia de USA. 3) Profesores que son conocidos en USA, especialmente por sus investigaciones. 4) Jefe del servicio de medicina. 5) Decano de tu facultad de medicina. 6) Profesores eméritos.

Si vas a tratar de conseguir este tipo de cartas de recomendación, el corolario es que trabajes o tengas una rotación con ellos con anticipación para que te conozcan mejor y puedan hablar mejor de ti.

Si no has tenido tiempo para que estos profesores/jefes te conozcan, pide una entrevista con elllos, explicales tu situacion y preguntales si seria posible que te escribieran una carta que apoye fuertemente tu aplicacion. Se sincero. Ellos estan acostumbrados a escribir recomendaciones y usualmente saben como es el proceso.

Es muy recomendable que al momento de pedirles las cartas de recomendacion, les entregues tu CV y personal statement para que lo que ellos escriban sea consistente con tu aplicacion.

Se recomienda que una carta de recomendación no sea más extensa de 1 pagina. Resalta tus logros.

Dear Sir,
I most highly recommend Dr. Santillán for a position in your Internal Medicine Residency Program. I have known Dr. Santillán for over three years through our research program in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I first became aquainted with her when she did a case-control study concerning the gastric mucosa in patients with H. pylori infection. Dr. Santillán gathered and analyzed the data and demonstrated that there was an increase in the percent of chronic atrophic gastritis present in the body of the stomach in infected patients compared to controls. This study will be published soon.
Dr. Santillán asked me last year to take part in a rotation on gastroenterology at the New York Hospital. Her work up there was considered to be outstanding by her supervisors and she received high marks for intelligence, hard work and enthusiasm. She is highly intelligent, honest, and organized. Her English is fluent and her knowledge of medicine wide. She has demonstrated a unique ability to solve problems and has the potential to be a first class clinician.

Dr. Reyes´s medical studies in our faculty spanned from April 1992 - after passing a very competitive admission test - to March 2000 and he earned his title of Physician - Surgeon in June 2000.
